Supporting accessibility modifications in rental homes

Modifications can make homes safer and reduce the level of support required by people with disability. This means they can live more independently.

To raise awareness and ensure people are aware of their rights, we have partnered with the Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) to work with the REIQ to deliver the Small changes, big difference campaign. This campaign is designed to help people learn how to ask for and get accessibility modifications installed in rental homes in Queensland.

The campaign provides resources and videos featuring real people to help tenants, landlords, property managers, and body corporate groups understand the importance of accessibility in rental homes. It highlights how changes can make homes safer and improve independence for people with disability, while also benefiting others like older Queenslanders, parents with young children and carers.

All renters have the right to ask for home modifications, and the campaign offers practical tips on how to make a strong, well-supported request. It also aims to build awareness about the rules and responsibilities around home modifications, promote understanding of the needs of tenants with disability, and encourage positive attitudes towards accessibility in the rental market.
