First Nations home ownership

Supporting First Nations home ownership is a key commitment in our efforts to deliver a place to call home for all Queenslanders.

We’re working with First Nations people, communities and leaders to create more opportunities for home ownership.

Owning a home can help with:

  • financial and housing security
  • independence and control over your future
  • building wealth for future generations
  • strengthening social and family connection
  • improving individual and community wellbeing.

In remote communities, home ownership can also create training and job opportunities, helping to build local workforces.

First Nations Home Ownership Information Sessions

We’re here to walk alongside First Nations people by sharing information to support their home ownership journey.

To do this, we offer:

  • one-on-one conversations to answer questions and provide guidance
  • First Nations Home Ownership Information Sessions for large groups, where we explain the benefits, responsibilities, and costs of owning a home.

Our First Nations Home Ownership Information Sessions are run in collaboration with sector partners such as Indigenous Business Australia and have already taken place throughout Far North Queensland and Toowoomba.

The sessions are a great chance to have a yarn in person, ask questions, share concerns, and learn more about the benefits, responsibilities, and costs of owning a home.

Contact us if you’d like to:

  • have a yarn with someone about how to get started with buying a home
  • organise a First Nations Home Ownership Information Session in your area
  • discuss partnering with us to deliver an information session if you work with a community organisation.

Helping tenants buy their homes

We’re supporting First Nations tenants to buy the homes they currently live in.

Through the Sales to Tenants program, tenants can purchase their government-owned rental home if it is for sale.

We'll provide targeted, culturally safe support, making the process easier for tenants to understand.

Buying a home in remote and discrete communities

We’re working with trustees in remote and discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to help people living in social housing buy a home within their community.

Pathways to owning your home in your community include:

Palm Island Rent-to-Buy Home Ownership Scheme

The Palm Island Rent-to-Buy Home Ownership Scheme allows eligible residents to buy their social housing home by entering into a rent-to-buy agreement with the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council.
