Housing support for older people
A home that makes it easier for older people to connect with family, friends and social activities brings benefits to individuals and whole communities. Older Queenslanders need to access and sustain appropriate housing while being supported by the health and aged care services they might need to be safe and independent.
Under the Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021-2025 (PDF, 3466.73 KB), we will develop and deliver housing with support for older Queenslanders experiencing or at risk of homelessness, including specific responses for older women, working with the aged care, health and disability sectors.
This is in addition to housing assistance already delivered through initiatives such as:
- developing the new Anne Street Garden Village demonstration project on the Gold Coast for older people to provide transferrable design learnings
- partnering with Churches of Christ in Queensland to develop and deliver over 120 new homes specifically for older people in Bongaree and Little Mountain (social and affordable housing)
- funding Coast2Bay $365,000 for 2020-2022 to deliver Better Together Housing to assist older women in Mackay and the Sunshine Coast to form co-tenancies in the private market to share the cost of living
- delivering $21.9 million in funding for 2020-21 to the Home Assist Secure network. Home Assist Secure supports older people and people of any age with disability to age-in-place by having access to subsidised home maintenance and minor modifications, information and referral.
We will continue to grow housing options for older people by leveraging new housing supply through the Queensland Housing Investment Growth Initiative.
