Housing pathways for young people

Everyone needs a place to call home, but young people in our communities can face challenges accessing housing.

Under the Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021–2025 (PDF, 3466.73 KB), we committed to help vulnerable young people to achieve social and economic independence through an integrated framework of housing with support.

Delivering on this commitment, the Queensland Government has released Towards ending homelessness for young Queenslanders 2022–2027—a policy and framework to improve housing outcomes for young people.

Towards ending homelessness is supported by a $29.8 million investment to deliver initiatives to ensure young Queenslanders have the information, opportunities and support to access safe, secure and affordable housing when they need it.

This is in addition to the $40.6 million (GST exclusive) in Homelessness Program funding in 2022/23 allocated to 40 non-government organisations to deliver 63 specialist homelessness services across Queensland providing a range of support services specifically for young people. These supports include temporary supported accommodation and tenancy sustainment services.

We will continue to grow housing options for young people by leveraging new housing supply through the Queensland Housing Investment Growth Initiative.

We will provide and link to a range of support options to help young people achieve long-term social and economic outcomes, while sustaining social, affordable, or private market tenancies.

In early 2021, Brisbane Housing Company completed a new 32-unit affordable housing complex at Woolloongabba in partnership with the department. Five of the 32 units are for young people, with dedicated tenancy support provided by Brisbane Youth Service.

The Queensland Government has invested in housing programs specifically for young people including Youth Foyers. We have an expanded Logan Youth Foyer, established a new Gold Coast Youth Foyer and will shortly commence construction on a Townsville Youth Foyer. Youth Foyers provide young people with stable housing and support to gain essential practical life skills to help them transition into mainstream housing and live independently. Youth Foyers are an internationally recognised pathway for young people to develop the skills they need to achieve independence and reduce their risk of homelessness, while pursuing their employment and career goals.
