Achievements so far
Since the launch of the Queensland Housing Strategy in 2017, we’ve been transforming the way housing assistance is delivered, increasing the supply of social and affordable homes, supporting construction industry jobs and partnering with non-government service providers to reduce homelessness.
We have delivered on an ambitious program of work, including:
- commenced over 2,400 new social housing homes supporting more than 1,800 construction jobs through the Housing Construction Jobs Program
- partnered with the community housing sector to increase housing supply, with 1,121 new social and affordable housing dwellings approved for construction, valued at over $203 million and supported by $136.9 million of government investment
- established the peak housing body, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queensland to represent and work with Indigenous Community Housing Organisations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councils across Queensland to build on strengths and to support a strong, resilient housing sector for First Nations peoples
- supported survivors of domestic and family violence through the construction of new crisis shelters in Caboolture, Cleveland, Woorabinda and the Sunshine Coast and replacement of crisis shelters in remote and discrete communities of Cherbourg, Pormpuraaw, Coen and Roma
- delivered legislative reforms for people who own and live in manufactured homes, residential services and retirement villages
- invited tenants, property owners and managers to have their say on Queensland’s residential tenancy laws with over 150,000 Queenslanders responding
- delivered The Coordinated Housing and Homelessness Response across 9 priority locations in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Redlands, Logan, Gold Coast
- commenced the Build-to-Rent pilot project to provide affordable and secure housing for more Queenslanders, and drive investment in the construction sector
- committed $12.5 million to fund 162 projects under the Dignity First initiative to support new and innovative ideas that prevent and reduce homelessness and help people experiencing homelessness live with dignity
- opened the doors to NRL Cowboys House Girls Campus providing 50 beds of supported accommodation to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from some of North Queensland's most remote communities, enabling them to access quality secondary education opportunities in Townsville
- introduced new and flexible products and services including Bond Loan Plus, rent subsidies, no interest loans, and head-leasing to help people access the private rental market
- provided an immediate housing response during COVID-19 which saw a drastic reduction of street homelessness across the state leading to longer-term housing outcomes for over 3,000 vulnerable Queenslanders.
Building on our achievements
Through the Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021–2025, we will continue to build on our achievements to make sure that all Queenslanders have a pathway to safe, secure and affordable housing.
Key actions have been developed in the context of current and anticipated housing market conditions and need. It reaffirms the objectives of The Queensland Housing Strategy to deliver more social and affordable homes and to transform the way housing services are delivered.
It’s about boosting housing supply, moving towards ending homelessness, supporting vulnerable people and securing a fair and accessible housing system. We share these objectives with our community partners and other government agencies—and we have a shared responsibility to work together to improve outcomes for all Queenslanders.
