Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traineeship is an opportunity for First Nations Queenslanders under 25 to earn and learn with our department. Trainees receive:

  • paid work at a real job
  • a nationally recognised qualification
  • hands-on learning
  • training
  • mentoring.

The traineeship program received $2 million in additional funding under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Action Plan 2019-2023 in 2019. The initiative will employ 64 trainees to 2023.

The traineeship program is delivered by a registered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training provider.

Benefits

The traineeship program aims to create work opportunities for First Nations peoples between 16 and 25 years of age. It will:

  • build careers in industries where workers are needed
  • enrich learning and professional development opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in urban and regional areas
  • create jobs across the state.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees benefit through:

  • a generous salary and superannuation
  • paid holiday and sick leave
  • fee-free training
  • flexible working arrangements for study, sporting, community and family commitments
  • lifelong skills and professional learning
  • a safe and supportive working environment.

Work and study arrangements

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees work fulltime and/or part-time. Trainees work toward a qualification in either:

  • business administration
  • community services
  • information, digital media and technology.

Students in years 10, 11 and 12 can work part-time around school hours and count their certificate toward a Queensland Certificate of Education.
