Minister’s message
All Queenslanders have a role to play to ensure we have enough water, both today and into the future.
I congratulate and thank the many departmental tenants who have reduced the amount of water they use to less than 800 litres per day.
Your commitment, along with the introduction of water saving initiatives and Level 5 water restrictions, has enabled social housing tenants to play an important role in the Queensland Government's efforts to sustain a vital resource.
To help tenants meet the requirement of Level 5 water restrictions, which is no more than 140 litres per person, per day; the Department of Housing is fitting water-saving devices such as dual flush toilets and water-efficient shower roses as a priority to properties in Level 5 water restriction areas. All other departmental properties will have these water saving devices installed when toilets and shower heads are due for replacement.
The department is also contacting households using more than 800 litres of water per day, so these tenants can take action to reduce their consumption.
Water is a precious resource for all Queenslanders and we have recognised this by promoting gardening with plants that tolerate dry conditions, recycling water and mulching through the 2007 Water-Wise Garden Competition.
In addition, work is underway to investigate ways that all departmental tenants in Queensland can be made more accountable for the amount of water they use. This is likely to include charging for water.
It is important to be aware of water use and I encourage all residents to continue their efforts to conserve water in this time of drought.
