2009 Water-Wise Garden Awards
The 2009 Water-Wise Garden Awards are open to all social housing tenants.
There are eight categories this year, including two new categories that support the Queensland Government's 'Towards Q2' initiative to encourage healthy lifestyles:
- edible gardens of fruits, vegetables or herbs, and
- new gardener, for those entering the awards for the first time.
You don't have to be an experienced gardener. It doesn't matter what size garden you have or whether it's a house, courtyard or balcony garden. It certainly doesn't have to be the biggest and most expensive to win an award, just as long as it reflects and promotes water-wise principles.
Your garden could feature drought resistant Australian natives such as grevilleas, wattle, bottle brush, kangaroo paw and banksias. You could also use water-saving techniques such as mulching, organic wetting agents and recycling grey water on the garden.
Entrants in parts of Queensland that are not affected by drought and water restrictions will be judged on the appropriate and effective use of water for their local conditions.
All social housing tenants will receive an entry form brochure in the mail soon. For further information, contact your nearest Housing Services office, community housing provider, or local government-managed housing provider. Entries close 1 September 2009.
