Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing

What is a periodic tenancy?

A periodic tenancy is a tenancy agreement that has no end date. All new tenants who sign a tenancy agreement after 1 January 2006 have a periodic tenancy.

What is a periodic tenancy review?

A periodic tenancy review is when the department reviews your circumstances to determine if your household has a continued need for housing assistance.

When are tenancies reviewed?

From the 1 January 2006, all new households receiving housing assistance will be reviewed after either four or ten years. The review period depends on the household circumstances when the tenancy agreement is signed.

10 year review periods
To be eligible for a ten year review period a household must have:

4 year review periods.
All other households will be reviewed four years after the start date of their tenancy agreement.

What happens during the tenancy review?

The Department will write to you when your periodic tenancy review is due. You will be asked to supply your household and income details to allow your continued need for housing assistance to be reviewed.

If you do not provide your household and income information, the Department may determine that your household is ineligible for housing assistance and serve a Notice to Leave.

What if I have a continued need for housing assistance?

If you still need housing assistance, your tenancy will continue and you will be given another review period. The length of the new review period will depend upon your household circumstances at the time of the review.

What happens if the department determines that I do not have a continued need for housing assistance?

The department will offer you alternative housing assistance to transition into private housing.

What if my circumstances change after I am no longer receiving housing assistance?

If your circumstances change after you have moved out of your property you can reapply for housing assistance.
