How to pay your rent

There are a number of convenient ways to pay your rent. If you have signed a Residential Tenancy Agreement, it is your responsibility as the tenant/s to make sure you pay your rent.

Rent payment options:

1. Rent deduction scheme

The rent deduction scheme is a free and easy way to pay. Your rent can be deducted from Centrelink pensions and paid automatically to the department each fortnight.

2. Direct debit scheme

The direct debit scheme is a simple and fast way to pay your rent directly to the department from your bank, credit union or building society account.

Check with your financial institution to see whether your account offers this electronic facility. It may also be useful to check the transaction fees for this service.

3. Rental coupon books and coupon slip

You can pay your rent at any External link Australia Post Office or Agency with slips from your rental coupon book or loose coupon slips available from your local Department of Housing office.

If you use other payment methods, such as Rent Deduction or Direct Debit, you can still use your rental coupon book for any special payments.

Replacement booklets can be collected from the department.

4. Periodical payments

You can arrange with your bank, credit union or building society to transfer rent payments from your account to the department. These payments can only be taken from one account.

5. Cheque or money order

You can pay your rent by sending a money order or cheque and your encoded coupon to the department.

This is an expensive method due to the fees payable on money orders and cheques, and the department recommends you avoid relying upon it for regular rental payments.
