Making a difference for Queensland's Indigenous people

The high levels of Indigenous housing need and the impact of housing conditions on their health are well documented and addressing these issues is a priority for the Department of Housing.

Queensland's Indigenous people experience a high level of housing need characterised by:

Indigenous people represent 16.9% of Queensland's housing need and more than 25% of Indigenous households in Queensland experience poverty after paying for their housing.

The department is committed to increasing the supply of appropriate housing and improving the quality of life for Indigenous people in remote and rural areas.

Working together

The department is committed to working with Indigenous people across Queensland on matters such as property and tenancy management, design, local community needs and land tenure.

Skilling and training initiatives for Indigenous people

Through its partnership arrangement with the Department of Public Works, which manages new constructions, the department also offers continuous employment opportunities for Indigenous people through apprenticeships.
