Accepting an offer of housing assistance

Please see Being offered housing assistance section before reading this page.
How do I accept the department's offer of housing?
After you advise the department that you accept the property, a sign up appointment is made with you and any other applicant who is to become a tenant.
What happens at the sign-up appointment?
You are asked to provide:
- evidence of income for all household members - this includes Employers Declaration. Centrelink Income Statements etc. See the forms section for a copy of the income declaration forms.
- two forms of personal identification - the Department of Housing has a list of appropriate types of identification.
- two weeks rent in advance. See How to pay your rent for details about the various methods of payment available; and
- any other documentation which the department requests.
You and any other proposed tenant then sign a Residential Tenancy Agreement.
The department advises you how much rent to pay. You must pay this amount at any Australia Post office after you sign the agreement and before you receive the keys to the home.
See also ‘Periodic tenancy reviews’ (D4) which provides information on when your household will be reviewed to determine your eligibility for continued housing assistance.
Can I ask questions about the Residential Tenancy Agreement?
Yes, you will be given time to read the agreement and ask questions. It is important that you understand everything before you sign the agreement. View the Residential Tenancy Agreement for further information.
What else happens when I accept an offer?
You are given other documents, all of which are explained to you. You also receive information about the different ways you can pay rent. See How to pay your rent for details about your rent and the various methods of payment.
You will also receive information about your periodic tenancy review. This review will occur either four or ten years after you become a tenant, depending on your household circumstances at the time you signed the tenancy agreement. The review will determine if you have a continued need for housing assistance.
What if I forget something that I was told at the appointment?
Moving into a home is very demanding, so don't worry if you forget something you were told. The
Moving in checklist (51Kb) will help you with your move.
