Boarding House Program

The Boarding House Program provides capital funds for the purchase or construction and furnishing of properties for use as singles accommodation.

Properties are managed by not-for-profit organisations and managing organisations which use revenue from rent payments to cover costs associated with tenancy and property management.

Objectives

The main objectives of the program are:

Target groups

Singles accommodation is targeted at low-income earners who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, with a special emphasis on single people who are socially marginalised seeking a safe, secure, affordable and flexible housing option. Accommodation is provided on a short, medium or long-term basis, with non-discriminatory access.

Eligibility

The following types of organisations are eligible to be considered for management of properties under the program:

Managing organisations are appointed following a tendering process.  Location of boarding houses is determined through a needs assessment process. Eligible organisations must demonstrate their capacity to provide the service.

Funding conditions

To receive funding or other assistance from the Department of Housing to provide a housing service, organisations must be:

Title arrangements:
Title is held by the Department of Housing and properties are leased to managing organisations.
Locations:
Inner Brisbane suburbs, Cairns, Gold Coast, Townsville, Nambour, Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Ipswich. Proposed future locations are Sandgate, Gladstone, Gympie and Hervey Bay.
Types of accommodation:
  • self-contained one-bedroom units;
  • studio apartments;
  • traditional bedrooms with shared facilities.
