Welcome to the ninth edition of the Community Housing information bulletin for 2009.

Nation Building - Social Housing Initiative update

Construction is underway on 25 projects approved under Stage One of the Nation Building Social Housing Initiative. These projects will see 495 dwellings completed by 30 June 2010, at a cost of $138 million.

Work has also commenced as part of Nation Building's 2009-10 repairs and maintenance program, which will deliver $40 million worth of upgrades and repairs to existing social housing dwellings by 30 June 2010. More than 16,000 work orders were issued to Queensland businesses to carry out $40 million worth of repairs and maintenance under the 2008-09 program.

Approval was given for an early start on 100 Stage Two projects, which will deliver more than 1,000 new dwellings. The remaining proposed projects for Stage Two are being considered by the Australian Government. The department will be advised of approved projects progressively throughout August 2009.

 Overview of Queensland's implementation schedule

  1. Repairs and maintenance program ($80 million)
    • $40 million in repairs and maintenance completed by 30 June 2009.
    • A further $40 million in repairs and maintenance completed by 30 June 2010.

  2. New construction program - Stage 1 ($138 million)
    • All new construction ready for occupancy by 30 June 2010.

  3. New construction program - Stage 2 ($1.062 billion)
    • 75% of all new construction (Stages 1 and 2) completed by 31 December 2010.
    • All 4,500 dwellings must be completed by 30 June 2012.
