Community Housing information bulletin – August 2009
Welcome to the eighth edition of the Community Housing information bulletin for 2009.
Department of Housing Final Report
The Final Report for the former Department of Housing, covering the period of 1 July 2008 to 26 March 2009 is now available on the Department of Communities (Housing and Homelessness Services) website.
The report highlights the activities and achievements of the former department as it continued to respond to the housing needs of Queenslanders.
For the period of the report, the former department:
- assisted almost 227,600 Queensland households by providing 74,544 households with social rental housing and helping 153,048 households access or sustain private market tenure
- funded and/or managed 66,077 social housing rental units (an increase of 582 units from 30 June 2008)
- progressed the implementation of one social housing system with the introduction of a new client intake and assessment process
- implemented the Queensland component of the National Rental Affordability Scheme, a joint Federal and State Government Initiative to stimulate the supply of new affordable rental dwellings across the nation, and
- approved 45 projects to improve communities within community renewal zones.
The report demonstrates the department's commitment to increasing the capability of not-for-profit housing providers to become providers of social and affordable housing within one social housing system, and to encourage and support innovation and continuous quality improvement by providers. The department's Business Development and Innovation Unit was established in Brisbane in October 2008 to support this aim.
The department acknowledges the important role community housing providers play in one social housing system, and the delivery of positive outcomes for clients.
