The Department of Housing is working with community and local government-managed housing organisations to improve the way housing assistance is delivered to Queenslanders.
The development of one social housing system is a fairer and more transparent way to ensure the funding allocated for housing assistance is spent where it is needed the most, for the time that it is needed.
The staged implementation of one social housing system requires the review of all housing programs, services and infrastructure to assess their alignment or 'fit' with the new policy and service delivery context.
Comment on a discussion paper outlining a new resourcing framework to support community housing participation in one social housing system closed on 11 February 2008. The discussion paper proposed a set of future resourcing arrangements and identified the major transition issues in moving to the new arrangements.
In May 2008, the department released a discussion paper
Realigning transitional housing in one social housing system (183Kb) which identified key policy and operational changes required to align transitional housing to one social housing system.
The department held four workshops across Queensland on the proposed changes in May 2008 and a
Summary Report (96Kb) summarising the feedback from these workshops and written responses to the discussion paper was released in August 2008.
In October and November 2008, the department hosted 12 workshops for transitional housing providers and area office staff to gather specific feedback on proposed service delivery arrangements for transitional housing. The
Summary Report (91Kb) contains feedback presented by stakeholders.
Not-for-profit organisations and local governments receive funds from the department to provide community-based solutions to local housing need through:
- crisis, transitional and long-term accommodation;
- information, advice and advocacy to residential tenants and people in housing need; and
- private housing support – information and assistance for older people and people with a disability living in their own home or renting privately.
The department is committed to improving the way it exchanges information with community housing service providers in Queensland. One of the avenues developed to facilitate communication between service providers and the department is an Extranet called
Community Housing On Line.
Through web-based technology, Community Housing On Line gives organisations in the sector access to a wide range of information tools, including departmental policy and procedures, a calendar of events, a communication centre and databases which were designed in consultation with sections of the Community Housing sector.
