Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan

The Australian Government's $42 billion External link Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan aims to protect the Australian economy from the global downturn by stimulating the building industry.

Queensland will receive almost $1.3 billion of the $6 billion in national funding for social housing, to be spent on maintenance, upgrades and construction of approximately 4,000 new properties between 2009 and 2012.

Stage one of the plan's Social Housing Initiative involves the construction of around 495 dwellings, some of which are already under development.

Stage two focuses on assisting the growth of large, independent and capable not-for-profit providers that can facilitate partnerships with government and the private sector.

Applications were sought from not-for-profit providers that:

Ensuring a rapid roll-out of capital works is a high priority, with 75% of the dwellings to be completed by the end of 2010. Tenancy management arrangements must focus on sustaining tenancies for clients who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and supporting the transition to secure, long-term accommodation.

To apply for either the construction or tenancy management components of the Social Housing Initiative, applicants were advised to download the relevant information packages from the department's website, including:

Applications for Capital Grant funding closed on 1 June 2009. The Expression of Interest process for Tenancy Management of Social Housing closed on 6 July 2009. All proposals were required to comply with both the Australian Government's requirements, as set out in the Australian Government Guidelines and the performance criteria established by the Queensland Government.
