The Lady Bowen Trust is an independent charity which aims to assist people who are experiencing chronic homelessness to achieve positive and lasting outcomes through targeted financial support.

A Place to Call Home

A Place to Call Home is a new national approach to help families move beyond homelessness by addressing its causes whilst providing safe, appropriate and stable housing.

The initiative gives families who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, a social housing rental property for the duration of their need and up to 12 months' coordinated help across the spectrum of social support services.

Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan

The Australian Government's $42 billion External link Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan aims to protect the Australian economy from the global downturn by stimulating the building industry.

Queensland will receive almost $1.3 billion of $6 billion in national funding for social housing, to be spent on maintenance, upgrades and construction of approximately 4,000 new properties between 2009 and 2012.

Building industry professionals and community and local government-managed housing providers are encouraged to get involved.

On 9-10 October 2006, a number of Directors-General, including Natalie MacDonald, Director General of the Department of Housing, visited the Bowen Basin. The visit was in response to the range of issues that have occurred in this region as a result of substantial expansion in the mining industry. In response to the issues reported by CEOs, the Department of Housing has conducted a review of its social housing responses and asset utilisation to ensure that its responses in the region are as effective as possible. Directors-General met again in Emerald in April 2007 to identify future strategies with regional representatives. This report outlines the actions the department intends to take as a result of the review.
