Design principles
Basic approach
All housing should be consistent with the central principle, expressed in the following diagram:

This needs to be understood as a diagram informing a design approach. It describes the provision of spaces or zones with changing degrees of privacy and control, and therefore the transition from the public realm (usually a street) to the private territory of the dwelling and its spaces.
Each housing unit should comprise:
- an appropriate built form
- an appropriate private external space, and
- an appropriate relationship to the public realm.
Interpreting the diagram:
In ground level housing, space B typically represents the front garden and driveway. Space D represents the back yard.
In above ground apartments, space B typically represents the shared stairwell or paths. Space D represents the private balcony.
