Design principles
Access by strangers
Access by unwelcome outsiders through the site should be prevented or the path should be formalised into a public street relationship. If access becomes formalised into a public street, then the housing should face and overlook it. The access has become a 'frontage' to which the design should respond.
Legitimate visitor access to and within the site should:
- be aided by legible layout and clearly visible or findable entries
- not impair the privacy and amenity of one household while accessing another, and
- be subject to casual surveillance.
Reasons:
- Residents' privacy and amenity should be respected, this is an important component to foster security.
