Ways to improve access at home
A number of items are available at hardware stores and may require a tradesperson to install them. Contact your local Home Assist Secure for information and assistance with employing tradespeople, contracting experts or in planning future work.
Home Assist Secure may also be able to assist with minor home maintenance and repair issues that relate to health, safety and security for eligible clients.
Entering the home
This section includes hints on making your street number and front entry easier to find; dealing with steps, door handles and locks that are difficult to use or see; and doors that are hard to open or close.
Internal hallways, doorways and windows
This section includes strategies for dealing with steps or changes of levels between surfaces; doorways and door handles that are hard to locate; hallways and doorways that are too narrow; and window latches that are difficult to reach, open or close.
Bathroom/toilet
This section includes hints on dealing with barriers to the bathroom, shower, bath and toilet access and use.
Kitchen
If you have problems with hotplate controls, oven height, fridge shelf height or your sink stove and fridge being too far apart, this section may help you.
Bedroom
This section offers helpful strategies for light switches that are too far from the bed or where the toilet is too far from the bedroom.
Cupboards, wardrobes and drawers
This sections deals with shelves/hanging rails that are too high or low; shelving in a cupboard or pantry that is too deep; and drawers and cupboard doors that are hard to open or close.
Lighting, controls, taps and flooring
This section includes hints in improving light levels in a room; changing hard to reach bulbs; dealing with light switches or power points that are hard to use or reach; removing trip hazards; and dealing with hard to use taps.
Outdoor areas
This section deals with some outside problems such as hard to use gate latches, garden taps and clotheslines; and letterboxes that are hard to open.
