The department's strategic direction

The Queensland Government seeks to improve Queenslanders' access to safe, secure, appropriate and affordable housing. The Department of Housing achieves this objective in a range of ways, from delivering traditional housing assistance to influencing the development of an effective and responsive housing system.

The department's responses to housing need are guided by the Housing Act 2003 and the Commonwealth State Housing Agreements.

Other documents such as the Strategic Plan 2007-2012 and the department’s strategic policy statements outline the strategic approach and key priorities of the department.

Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan 2007-2012 outlines the broad strategic direction of the Department of Housing to assist in planning for the next five years.

Commonwealth State Housing Agreement (Multilateral)

The Commonwealth State Housing Agreement 2003-2008 (Multilateral) is the major source of government funds for the Department of Housing. The first Agreement was signed in 1945, and successive Agreements have formed the foundation for today's social housing system. The Agreement articulates the agreed principles and objectives to be pursued in delivering housing assistance.

All states and territories have signed a Multilateral Agreement with the Australian Government, which covers the period 2003 to 2008. The Multilateral Agreement also requires each state and territory to develop a Bilateral Agreement with the Australian Government.

Commonwealth State Housing Agreement (Bilateral)

The Bilateral Commonwealth State Housing Agreement 2003-2008 (Bilateral) between the Australian Government and the Queensland Government outlines the directions for the delivery of housing assistance in Queensland, focusing on key areas of strategic interest to both parties. It also contains key objectives and strategies for the Queensland Government to achieve during the agreement period.

Strategic Policy Statements

Improving People’s Lives Through Housing – An integrated Approach to Housing for People and Communities complements the Strategic Plan. It is a key policy document explaining how the Department of Housing’s programs contribute to improving housing accessibility, appropriateness and affordability for Queenslanders.

The Disability Service Plan 2007-2010 outlines how the Department of Housing will continue to improve its service delivery to clients with a disability, the actions we will take and how we will measure our success. The plan also describes how we will support members of our workforce who have a disability and reduce barriers to employment in the department for people with a disability.

Young People’s Housing Statement - This Statement, developed by the Department of Housing and the Queensland Youth Housing Coalition, provides the vision that will guide the department's approach to better housing assistance for young people in the future.
