The Department of Housing

The Department of Housing plays an important role in providing direct and indirect housing assistance, and in influencing the overall housing system within Queensland to improve people's lives through housing.

The Minister for Housing

Robert Schwarten is Queensland's Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology.

The legislative framework

The Housing Act 2003, which commenced on 1 January 2004, facilitates a contemporary response to the challenges facing the department and provides a modern legislative basis for Department of Housing activities.

Strategic policy direction

The Queensland Government seeks to improve Queenslanders' access to safe, secure, appropriate and affordable housing.

Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act 1992 gives you the right to apply for access to documents, including those about you held by agencies.

Appeals and Review

Some decisions made by the Department of Housing staff about housing services provided to clients or registered providers can be appealed.

Employment

The Department of Housing employs approximately 1,150 people across Queensland in a wide variety of professions.
