Our history

From the early days of the Queensland Housing Commission to the Queensland Department of Housing of today.

On 1 January 2004, the Housing Act 2003 took effect making way for a more contemporary and flexible system for administering the State Government's housing programs. The Act repealed the State Housing Act 1945 and in effect abolished the Queensland Housing Commission, which had been in operation for the past 58 years.

This resulted in the Department of Housing assuming all the responsibilities of and services formerly provided by the Queensland Housing Commission, including public housing.

The department took the opportunity to celebrate the Commission’s 58 years of achievements in Queensland, and embraced the changing direction this new housing legislation provides for realising the department’s vision of ‘improving people’s lives through housing and community renewal’.

This website follows the life of the Commission from 1945 to 2003 through a timeline, and highlights the achievements and challenges faced by the Commission and its staff over this period. Stories from tenants and long-serving staff are also featured in this site.
